My edition is the Quality Paperback Book Club, through St. Martin's Press (trade paperback) edition, published in 2006. This is an omnibus edition containing I Am Legend, several short stories, and Hell House. Hell House in this edition begins on page 9 and ends on page 301. (I will probably read the short stories too. If I do, I will share in a separate post.)

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - Review

I've had this book on my TBR for a long time. I am glad I finally read it. I've long been an Oscar Wilde fan. I was in his play, The Importance of Being Earnest in high school.

 
Dorian Gray is a good novel. It raises questions about narcissism, morality, even the association of ugliness with aging (and with evil), and the old being less than. It also has one of my favorite quotes, "The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame." So true.

The only problem I had, and it's a minor one, were the long passage describing Dorian's interests, his fleeting passions, and Lord Henry's various monologues. Yet there's no denying that this is an excellent novel of Gothic fiction.

I have seen two film adaptations of Dorian Gray. The 1945 and 2009 films. Both of them changed the story and I have to say I much preferred the book. Not really a surprise though, right?

Gothic Horror - Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher

I've decided to do away with the Gothic and Horror Master posts, as no one (including me) utilizes them. For a wider audience's sake (if I have a wide audience...lol), I will do individual posts and anyone is welcome to discuss in the comments and/or share stories you've been reading.

BEWARE OF SPOILERS AHEAD

This is one of my favorite Poe stories. Probably in large part due to my love of Vincent Price and having seen the movie long before I read the story (I've read this many times). Of course, I can also credit Price with sparking my entire love of and fascination with Poe's works. I've read and reread so many of his stories, and my favorite poem of all time, Annabel Lee.

At the center of this story, in my humble opinion, is mental illness, and some of the factors that can bring about "madness" as they called it back then. Fear, dread, guilt. All are apparent and so expertly illustrated in Poe's Gothic tones. Also, the fear of being buried alive (Taphophobia), which was prevalent in the days before modern medicine. So much so that in the 18th and 19th centuries there were "Safety Coffins." William Tebb and Edward Perry Vollum even published a book titled Premature Burial and How It May Be Prevented. There were coffins affixed with a string attached to a bell outside the grave. If a person found themselves buried alive, they could simply ring the bell (surely not so simple, and how many of those bells were actually heard...yikes!). Later inventions were more elaborate. So, why am I talking about premature burial? Precisely because that is what happens to Usher's sister. But for her there is no escape because she is not buried in a grave. She is entombed in a vault in the donjon keep! There is no bell for her to ring, or some other apparatus to make someone aware. Yet, when she somehow finally breaks free from her tomb, we learn that Usher had heard her..."I heard her first feeble movements in the hollow coffin. I heard them--many, many days ago--yet I dared not--I dared not speak!" Why did he not speak up? Was it the guilt of burying her alive in the first place? Who knows, but she does manage to break out and the state of her, of what she endured, scares Usher to death. As Usher's friend flees, the house literally cracks apart and falls into the ground. A metaphor for the destruction of mental illness, and the fear of death? Those are my thoughts anyway. 

The reason I wanted to read this story again is because one of my favorite horror (TV) series creators is bringing a new take on the story to Netflix. Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, does it again with "A contemporary horror series based on multiple works by Edgar Allan Poe. To secure their fortune — and future — two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one."

Gothic Stories Master Post 2022 #SomethingWickedFall

I have lined up a selection of works and collections by classic authors considered writers of Gothic horror/fiction. I will be picking and choosing from works by M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, and from this Project Gutenberg collection of works by various authors, Black Spirits and White: A Book of Ghost Stories. I'm also considering The Witch of Ravensworth by George Brewer, The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson, and The Haunted House by Walter Hubbell. This will be time permitting, of course.

Gothic Stories Master Post 2021 #SomethingWickedFall

Note on the schedule: This book does not have any clear chapter numbers, but there are clear breaks in the text at certain points. On sections of the schedule where one week ends on a certain page, and the next week starts on that same page, look for the clear page breaks. Hope this helps.

An update (of sorts) on The Woman in White and #SomethingWickedFall

Yeah, so this event has not been going as planned. As many of you know, I moved from Tennessee to Michigan in August. It was a big move and not a fun one. Also, my grandfather passed away in September. My sister, my nieces and I traveled to Tennessee last week for the funeral. Needless to say, it has been a hard couple of months. My reading is suffering, as I'm still trying to get this house in order. Those who have moved house know the difficulties of continuing to work while unpacking/arranging. It's hard enough without a death in the family, and then trying to unpack and shelve 3000+ books. 

Anyway, I have not made it very far into The Woman in White. I'm on page 157 which is WAY behind the read-along schedule. You know what though? I'm giving myself a pass and that means you get one too, if you're also behind. 

My thoughts so far...

This is a beautifully written book. Collins definitely had a way with words. It's also a bit slow though I am enjoying it to a certain extent. I'm intrigued by what the story of the woman in white is going to turn out to be. I know I don't trust Sir Percival because the dog didn't like him. That's always a true sign. lol Also, wondering what's going on with Mr. Hartright, in light of his disheveled and downtrodden appearance when encountered by Vincent Gilmore. 

I will keep plugging away and hopefully will finish by the end of the month. Let me know your thoughts, if you're still reading, and how far along you are in the comments.

Gothic Stories in September 

Unfortunately, I didn't get around to any Gothic short stories in September, but plan to try to read a few in October. The three books we are reading for my TrueBookTalk book group (on Goodreads) would be considered Gothic so I will probably share thoughts on those as I finish. I'll keep the Gothic stories master post tab open in the menu for continued thoughts through the end of the event.

Horror Stories in October

I will create a horror stories master post and put the link in the menu for any thoughts you would like to share on what you're reading. I'm hoping to get to at least some of the stories in Stephen King's 

Bazaar of Bad Dreams.

💀 Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White read-along. We will be reading the book for the entire two months. I've been wanting to read this one for a long time. 

Discussions will be held on this blog. I will put a new post up each week on Sunday (with final discussion post up on Sunday, November 1...we will skip Sunday, October 25 since it's the day after Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon and people will probably be recuperating) and we will read along according to the schedule below.

My edition is the Penguin Classics edition, published 2009. 672 pages, though we are only going to reading page 3-626 which includes the two prefaces and the full book text. We are going to have to wing it with page numbers only, as there are so many new chapters under each character's point of view, I couldn't figure out how to split them up. I hope this will work for us. Yikes!

👻 In September, we're focusing on Gothic stories (Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and others). There's a great list on Goodreads for reference, Best Gothic Books of All Time. 👹 We're going to have one or two horror movie watch-alongs! I'm not sure which ones we will watch yet. I will mull some titles over and then create a poll so everyone can vote. Any suggestions? Leave me a comment. Since not everyone is on the same social media platforms these days, I have a Seasons of Reading Slack group (I use it for my online book group and it's so much better than Twitter chats) for our watch-alongs. Slack is free so you don't have to worry about that. Stay tuned!
