30-Day Horror Movie Challenge: Science Fiction Horror...Alien franchise

Alien (1979)

Tagline: In space no one can hear you scream.

Synopsis: In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causing him to fall into a coma. Prometheus (2012)

Tagline: They went looking for our beginning. What they found could be our end.

Synopsis: The discovery of a clue to mankind's origins on Earth leads a team of explorers to the darkest parts of the universe. Two brilliant young scientists lead the expedition. Shaw (Noomi Rapace) hopes that they will meet a race of benevolent, godlike beings who will in some way verify her religious beliefs, while Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) is out to debunk any spiritual notions. However, neither the scientists nor their shipmates are prepared for the unimaginable terrors that await them. (Google)

My favorite SciFi Horror...

I'm going with the entire Alien franchise because two of the movies are my favorites. I saw the first movie when I was about 11 years old. To say it had an effect on me is an understatement. I was scared, and it was so gross, I literally got sick to my stomach. I remember I had to leave the theater for a few minutes, but I don't remember throwing up. I did feel quite ill though. The next time I watched it was probably on video in the 80s. It didn't make me ill then, but was still scary as hell. Even now when I watch it, it doesn't fail to scare me. Part of it is the alien itself, but it's also the finality of space, and being trapped on a spaceship. There's no escape.

Prometheus comes along 33 years later and I was completely blown away. I know there are people that hate it. I get flack for loving it all the time. I don't care. There was just something about the story...the archaeology aspect, the search for human origins in space, Michael Fassbender (oh...sorry!)...it was compelling. Also, some genuinely funny parts with comic relief provided by Idris Elba (swoon). I have probably watched this one over 20 times. I've seen it more times than all the films in the franchise combined. I was so excited when the next film was released, Alien: Covenant. I liked it, but it just didn't live up to my expectations after Prometheus. Still, Michael Fassbender. lol I'm hoping they will make another one. I guess it remains to be seen.

  2. Alien is the best sci-fi horror hands down. But Life is a fun one that came out a few years ago that is pretty good and horrific!

    1. Yes! Life was really good. I also came across one from the 90s that I remember being really good...Screamers. It's on Crackle (free). I'm going to watch it again.
