5 Cool Horror Movies to Watch this Weekend and {Giveaway}

Looking for some great horror movies to watch over the weekend, or during the scariest month of the year?  Author Kevin Krohn is here today to share....

The 5 Coolest Horror Movies You May Have Missed
By Kevin Krohn

“If movies are the dreams of the mass culture…horror movies are the nightmares.” – Stephen King

The Halloween season brings about a person’s willingness to expose themselves to their basic fears more than any other time. Ghost stories, haunted houses, and horror films have become the traditional staples of October for many.

So why do we put ourselves through it? For some it is the physical rush experienced from the fear-producing adrenaline, while others use the cautionary tales to reinforce their own cultural values of right and wrong, good versus evil.

According to Wikipedia, “Horror is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience’s primal fears. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer, and the macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes.”
If you plan on putting yourself through the self-inflicted terror this month, consider these cool horror options for the Witching Season.

May
2002
Rated:
Tagline: “Be careful…she may just take your heart.”
Critical Acclaim: “May is a horror film and something more and deeper, something disturbing and oddly moving.” – Roger Ebert
Think: ‘Carrie’ meets ‘Juno’
Why it’s cool: I don’t know if many horror films could be referred to as quirky and cute, but May is a quirky and cute story about a lonely girl looking for friendship, albeit in one of the more disturbing ways possible.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
2006
Rated: R
Tagline: “Jason, Freddy, Michael. We all need someone to look up to.”
Critical Acclaim: "a must for those who like thrills laced with a sense of humor” – New York Daily News
Think: ‘Friday the 13th’ meets ‘This is Spinal Tap’
Why it’s cool: Because it’s funny. A mockumentary following the rise of a serial killer-in-training, Behind the Mask takes an entertaining look into a world where Jason, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers are real. The documentary crew captures Leslie Vernon’s efforts to join the ranks with his idols as the next great slasher king.

Versus
2000
Rated: R
Tagline: “Beware the past. Fight the present. Fear the future.”
Critical Acclaim: "...A Japanese zombies-vs.-gangsters action-horror comedy that plays like Quentin Tarantino remaking THE EVIL DEAD while on a speed binge...” Rolling Stone
Think: ‘Night of the Living Dead meets ‘Kill Bill’
Why it’s cool: Ninjas and zombies. Not sure I could say anything cooler than that.

Zombie
1979
Rated: R
Tagline: “We are going to eat you!”
Critical Acclaim: “Filled with lasting iconic imagery, gruesome special effects, and memorable sequences.” – Cinema Crazed
Think: ‘Dawn of the Dead’ meets ‘Jaws’
Why it’s cool: Originally rated X in the United States to keep children from seeing the gore, theaters handed out barf bags for audience members attending. The payoff for stomaching the gore is that you get to see a zombie fight a shark.

When a Stranger Calls
1979
Rated: R
Tagline: “Don’t watch it alone.”
Critical Acclaim: #28 on Bravo’s ‘The 100 Scariest Movie Moments”
Think: ‘Scream’ before ‘Scream’
Why it’s cool: Probably the most well-known film on the list, but it is cool because it scared me as a kid. Tame by today’s standards, this thriller managed to create suspense without the gore and violence of some of the above movies. “Have you checked the children?”

Latter-Day of the Dead by Kevin Krohn
"Harrowing cries escaped the contorted faces of our flock. End of Days was a known truth but never a faced reality. Once the madness broke...we feared it would never subside."

A thrilling tale of horror from Kevin Krohn, "Latter-Day of the Dead" tells the story of a hallowed compound's fight for survival against unbridled evil.

  4. The only one of those that I have seen is WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, and I agree that the movie is scary!

The first movie that scared the dickens out of me is THE CHANGELING (1980). I was just a kid myself, about ten years ago, and that was the first time that I had ever seen automatic writing and it freaked me out! Also, the bathtub scenes terrified me!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  5. I love watching horror movies all through Halloween and then some. My favorite will always be the orginal "Halloween" movie. That movie always gets me. Not really sure there is one reason why I like horror movie except they keep me at the edge of my seat. And it's fun to be scared watching a movie. I have seen a never When A Stranger Calls movie but; not the orginal one. Will have to give those others a try also. Your book sounds very creepy. Thanks for the giveaway.

  6. I think I'm a lot like the others, the only one I've seen is When A Stranger Calls, though the remake sucked big time.

I tend to like the old school horror movies: House on Haunted Hill (1959), The Haunting (1963), The Uninvited (1944), Cat People (1942), and I could go on but I won't. I do like most of the Hammer movies, though there are a couple that sucked. I think the only slasher movies I enjoy are the Halloween movies, though I can do without Halloween 3 and the Rob Zombie remakes, and the Scream movies.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

My favorite is pretty classic - the very first Halloween. My favorite just all out scary movie is Last House on the Left- yikes!! And finally, House of Psychotic Women gets a vote from me too, just for the one liners and oddness of it. Lol.
