My thoughts:
Michelle Franklin's Tales from Frewyn never fail to entertain and The Reporter from Marridon is no exception. It's a short story/novella that packs in a lot of fun.
I don't think I'll ever grow accustomed to how Rautu treats the Commander. I'm kind of a feminist so it is mildly irritating how he expects her to be at his service in all aspects, if you catch my drift. But I realize that it is part of his culture and his character so I will definitely not hold it against the story. Somehow I can't help but be reminded of Conan the Barbarian. Rautu conjures images of him when I'm reading. I realize Conan is not a giant, but the general mannerisms and attitude towards women (again, I know it's part of his culture, in both cases). I think what I love most about Rautu is his love of chocolate. I hear you, dude! And I'm totally in agreement with his dislike of white chocolate. I mean, white chocolate is okay, but in no way does it measure up to the real thing...good, old-fashioned medium to dark chocolate. (Okay, where's my Hershey's with Almonds?)
What I really enjoyed in this story was the apparent tie to our present situation with the paparazzi. Michelle does a nice job of projecting a reporter who does not care about anything but getting the story (not saying that all reporters are like that). The manner in which he is finally dealt with is especially satisfying.
Michelle has built a wonderful world with Frewyn and has created fun and interesting characters. I always enjoy reading her stories.

The Reporter from Marridon
Part of the Tales from Frewyn StoriesA reporter from Marridon, the advanced and allied nation to the north of Frewyn, is dispatched to Diras to meet with the famous Commander and Den Asaan, heroes and saviors of the Two Continents. It would seem to be a simple task, to ask a few questions of the strange woman and giant, but when the reporter slights the king's personal guard, he finds that getting a story to print may be harder than previously conceived.

Thanks so much for hosting! :D I'm glad you enjoyed the novella.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a bit of a feminist- I have to be as a woman- and I always find Rautu's manner toward Boudicca amusing, as she is the one really in charge of the relationship. Interesting that you should think Rautu like Conan! Howard was a feminist as well and created many strong female characters in his fiction, some in his Conan stories, and some in his historical fantasy fiction. He often referred to Conan as a giant in his prose, though he was only a little over six feet (as Howard was himself).
White chocolate is not chocolate. It is a deception, a coagulated sugar and butter fat mulch that must die for its disingenuous name. Can you tell which of the characters is modeled after me? ;)
DeleteYou're more than welcome, Michelle.
I love the Conan books. I haven't read them all, but I had this boyfriend when I was in my early twenties and we used to read them together. I knew that Howard was a big man because I remember seeing a biopic about him that starred Vincent D'Onofrio and Lily Taylor. He was an interesting man.
Of course, I knew he had to modeled after you! =O)
I loved The Whole Wide World and the book that Howard's love interest wrote about his life. He was a genius who had such a tragic end. I adore much of his work, The God in the Bowl and Spears of Clontarf being my very favourites of his stories.
DeleteRautu is very much me, but then so is Boudicca. I have dark chocolate hidden all over the house and would probably dress in a loincloth if it were socially acceptable. Often in my head, my answers to things are Rautu's answers, only because they are so ridiculous and agitating- and therefore amusing- but the Boudicca in me often overrules.
Rautu's brothers do not share his gruff manner or ideas, and neither do most of his people. I don't want to ruin it for you, as you will learn more about his past in subsequent books, but there is a reason he has a hardened shell (and a gooey, tender centre!)toward women. He is rather like a Cadbury creme egg: once you remove the thin tinfoil outside, you get to the chocolate, and once you eat through that, you discover the saccharine soft centre.
